Winter DanceBy Samree DishonThe winter dance was held for the middle school students on December twelfth. This is a fun way for the middle schoolers to end the semester and go onto their break. This dance is an event sponsored by NJHS with the help of StuCo. NJHS got the gym ready and decided the theme should be the North Pole. Each grade has a good time dancing and singing along, but the sixth graders especially did not seem to get enough. They jumped along to the beat of the music and sang at the top of their lungs. It’s clear to say they had the best time. Graham Nelson, seventh grade, was the DJ for this event. He played good music that helped to make the night fun.

Late Start RecapBy Anna ClaybornThe late start in January kicked off the new year well with an exciting spelling bee. Students from grades fifth through eighth were able to compete. The third place winner is Molly C. (5th Grade). Olga R. (5th Grade) took second place. Finally, Evelyn M. (5th Grade) claimed first place. Evelyn M. will be representing Flagstaff at the Regional Spelling Bee. Good luck Evelyn! Incredibly, all three winners were from Mrs. Burnett’s class! The late start theme was movie character day. There were tons of great costumes. After the spelling bee, the middle school did activities with their homeroom. January’s late start was great!

District Robotics TeamBy Julia CurdOn January 2, the district robotics team Up-A-Creek Robotics opened their new headquarters. The open house hosted at the new building was a ton of fun, with lots of food, and tours being given of the new facility.
The building opened just a day before needed - the new challenge was released the next day. The team gets a new challenge every year, and past years include shooting basketballs, frisbees, and exercise balls, and climbing towers. This year's game, FIRST Stronghold, combined them, with scaling towers, shooting balls into castles, and crossing different barriers, to defeat your opponent’s castle. Last year, the team won both regionals they attended, and got to attend the world championship in St. Louis for the first time ever! Wish them luck for another great season!
